Green Space Development
SHEBEEN has worked with the Asian Welfare Association and through community consultation has secured £30,000 for designing, landscaping and art work for the Stavely Road Community Garden. During this time we have run community art events at local schools & library and organized the opening event of this garden which was attended by lord mayor and 130 local residents of mainly BME origin.
Input to BME inclusion debate
SHEBEEN provides regular input to several Boards such as the Environment Agency REPAC, Groundwork Trust Sheffield, Ramblers Association, Peak Park Audit group and others. We have also provided input to Council consultation exercises, attended conferences and provided speakers for different conferences. We have organized a one day conference brokering links between BME adults and environmental development organisations.
Awareness raising
We have held stalls at community fairs which included Heeley, Sharrow, Abbeyfield & “On the waterfront.” as well as 4 conferences -Climate change, HillsboroughCollege, BME health forum, and own “Roots and Routes” conference.
We have provided Talks to several BME organisations & presentations to 16 BME client groups
We have had Interviews on 4 radio shows; appearance on 1 TV programmes and 3 awareness raising videos -Ramblers, Care 4 Air, Environment Agency Fishing promotion. We also had published many articles in local newspapers and community newsletters.
Introducing BME youth groups to environmental opportunities:
We have introduced the YAAF group (Young Asian Adults Forum) to fishing, cycling and hill walking. We ran a Peak Park Access Course with a group of 12 young people of chinese origin involving a 2 day residential in a youth hostel and taster sessions in pot-holing, orienteering, hill walking and abseiling.
Promoting walks for health amongst BME adults: supporting
We established a “Black men walk for health” group and organising 2 walks for refugees and asylum seekers.
